A Tower with a Rich History

The LeVeque Tower’s history is as fascinating as its architecture. Originally designed by C. Howard Crane and opened as the American Insurance Union Citadel in 1927, the tower’s ornate Art Deco ornamentation and terracotta facade added to its striking height which made it the fifth tallest building in the world at the time and it was the tallest building in Columbus until 1974.

It’s just a beautiful piece of architecture and I’m not the only one that thinks so but art and architecture critics have spoken highly of the tower’s design with Dudley Crafts Watson, director of the Chicago Art Institute, even calling it “the most original and American of skyscrapers” and “just an honest piece of magnificent construction.” Step inside and you’re immediately transported back in time.

Over the years, the tower faced challenges, changing hands multiple times and adapting to different uses. In 2011, a group of real estate investors took ownership, leading to a transformative mixed-use development. The tower now houses not only Hotel LeVeque but also apartments, condominiums, offices, and a restaurant. The renovation project, completed in 2017, preserved the tower’s historic charm while modernizing its interior.

I’ve been in some nice hotels, but they really have done a rather magical job with Hotel LeVeque. The interior design skillfully combines the tower’s original architectural features with contemporary elegance and all of it is centered on romantic starry skies. Was it a good pick to celebrate our anniversary? It absolutely was.

The lobby is one of those spaces you’ll actually want to take a seat in and not just stop in for a quick check-in. Take a good look at the lighting, the gilt mirrors, and luxurious upholstery, setting the tone for an elegant stay. The celestial theme permeates every aspect of the hotel, from constellation artwork on the walls and ceilings to telescopes in guest rooms. Start connecting the dots right from the entrance.

The Rooms: Elegant and Comfortable

The room is so elegantly decorated and the gold and black theme is exquisite. Keep connecting the dots of the celestial theme as you notice the zodiac artwork and even the starry design of the notepad. I loved all of the extra little decorations on the shelves and walls. It just added so much to the experience.

Leave your room to take a bite to eat and come back to find even more little secrets of the stay. The turn-down service transforms your room into a private planetarium, projecting a soothing array of stars and galaxies onto the ceiling and you even get a little starry treat.

To say it was a magical stay is an understatement. They have taken the theme and fully integrated into every aspect of the hotel stay here.

The Keep: A Step Back in Time

Hotel LeVeque’s bar and restaurant, The Keep, is also amazing, so good that you won’t even need to leave the hotel. With simple and chic decor featuring wood and leather accents, it offers an impressive cocktail menu. We thought we’d just have a drink and then go out for dinner, but the menu looked so impressive, we decided to stay. We opted to celebrate our anniversary with a tower of oysters and I couldn’t have been happier.
